Z
The Bitmap Brothers' Sector-Capture Territorial RTS Cult Classic
Engineered in 1996 by British masters The Bitmap Brothers, Z discarded conventional resource harvesting in favor of rapid sector-flag territorial conquest, mechanized vehicular hijacking, and beer-swilling robotic humor.
Abolishing Base Building: Sector Flag Territory
At the height of Command & Conquer's popularity, The Bitmap Brothers rejected base-construction and mineral harvesting. In Z, maps were partitioned into distinct territorial zones containing autonomous vehicle and droid factories. Capturing a territory's central flag instantly linked the factory to the player's grid, accelerating production countdown timers and demanding perpetual offensive pressure.
Beer-Drinking Grunts and Commander Zod
Cinematic cutscenes starred slovenly, beer-drinking robot grunts Brad and Allan enduring the foul-tempered rants of cigar-chomping Commander Zod. Introducing tactical vehicle-jacking—where sniper fire neutralized tank drivers allowing foot grunts to commandeer empty enemy armor—Z remains celebrated for its blistering tempo and British attitude.
