Volition (1993)

Pioneers of Geo-Mod Real-Time Destruction, Red Faction, and Saints Row

United States · 1993 · studio

Founded in 1993 in Champaign, Illinois, by Mike Kulas and Matt Toschlog as Parallax Software, Volition was an icon of physical simulation and open-world entertainment. From 6DOF flight combat in Descent and real-time voxel terraforming via the Geo-Mod engine in Red Faction, to the irreverent open-world crime satire of Saints Row, Volition shaped generations of sandbox design.

Volition (1993)

Descent and the Breakthrough of Geo-Mod Physics

Launching with 1995's true 3D six-degrees-of-freedom shooter Descent, Volition proved its engineering prowess. In 2001, Red Faction pioneered the revolutionary Geo-Mod technology, granting players the unprecedented ability to blast tunnels through solid rock walls. Later, 2009's Red Faction: Guerrilla simulated real-world structural physics, allowing players to demolish entire Martian facilities sledgehammer by sledgehammer.

The Saints Row Cultural Counterweight

Debuting on Xbox 360 in 2006, Saints Row initially filled the urban sandbox void before morphing into an outrageous celebration of slapstick absurdity. With Saints Row: The Third (2011) and Saints Row IV (2013)—featuring superhero mobility and alien presidents—Volition celebrated pure video game escapism until its bittersweet closure by Embracer Group in 2023.
