Valkyrie Profile (1999)
tri-Ace's Melancholic Norse Elegy of Mortal Vignettes and Four-Button Combo Battles Before Ragnarok
Valkyrie Profile is a 1999 role-playing game developed by tri-Ace and published by Enix for the PlayStation. Directed and written by Yoshiharu Gotanda with exquisite character art by brothers Kou and Yoh Yoshinari and a progressive-symphonic score by Motoi Sakuraba, it cast players as chooser-of-the-slain Lenneth witnessing mortal tragedies across Midgard on the eve of Ragnarok.
Spiritual Concentration, Mortal Vignettes, and the Countdown to Ragnarok
Defying every convention of linear town-to-town JRPG storytelling, Yoshiharu Gotanda structured Valkyrie Profile around an eight-chapter apocalyptic countdown in which Odin and goddess Freya dispatch battle-maiden Lenneth above a painted overview of Midgard. Meditating through Spiritual Concentration, Lenneth hears the final cries of doomed knights, betrayed princesses, suicidal mages, and selfless thieves—each unfolding as a self-contained melancholic short story before death claims them. Once recruited as Einherjar, these fallen spirits must be trained in haunted side-scrolling dungeons—where Lenneth shoots freezing ice crystals to build platforming stairs—and permanently transferred up to Valhalla to fight the Aesir-Vanir war, forcing players to part with their strongest heroes.
Four-Button Simultaneous Juggling and the Hidden Seal Value Truth
In combat, tri-Ace assigned each of the four party members directly to one of the PlayStation face buttons—Cross, Circle, Triangle, and Square—turning turn-based encounters into rhythmic fighting-game juggles. Timing simultaneous or staggered strikes shatters enemy guards and fills a 100-point Hit Gauge to trigger flamboyant Purify Weird Soul finishers such as Lenneth's iconic 'Nibelung Valesti!' Even more daring was the hidden Seal Value mechanic: dutifully obeying Freya's divine quotas leads only to a hollow standard victory, whereas subtly defying Asgard—removing Lenneth's Seal ring, visiting weeping lily meadows, and reuniting with sorcerer Lezard Valeth and mercenary Arngrim—awakens her sealed human memories as Platina in one of gaming's greatest true endings.
