Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (2011)

Naughty Dog's Desert PS3 Blockbuster of Lawrence of Arabia Lore and Gravity-Defying Set Pieces

United States · 2011 · game

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is a 2011 action-adventure directed by Amy Hennig and Justin Richmond at Naughty Dog for the PlayStation 3. Tracing Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan's bond from Cartagena backstreets to the lost 'Atlantis of the Sands' in Arabia's Rub' al Khali desert, it pushed late-cycle PS3 hardware through landmark burning-chateau, capsizing-liner, and disintegrating cargo-plane sequences.

Father-Son Obsession and the Trail of Lawrence of Arabia

Built while Naughty Dog split into two parallel teams—allowing a second unit to quietly craft The Last of Us—creative director Amy Hennig and game director Justin Richmond turned the trilogy's third act inward to examine Nathan Drake's compulsion to risk everything he loves. Opening with a bruising London pub brawl before flashing back twenty years to a teenage orphan pickpocketing Victor Sullivan's wallet in Cartagena, Colombia, the plot pits Nate and Sully against shadowy Hermetic Order leader Katherine Marlowe along T. E. Lawrence's historical trail toward Ubar, the cursed 'Iram of the Pillars' swallowed by the Arabian desert.

Capsizing Liners, Cargo-Plane Freefall, and Rub' al Khali Sand

Engineering some of seventh-generation gaming's most audacious playable stunts on the Cell processor, Naughty Dog chained together escalating physical simulations: escaping a collapsing French chateau consumed by real-time spreading flames, fighting across rotating walls and shattering glass skylights inside a luxury cruise ship rolled ninety degrees by storm waves, and dangling from cargo netting out the open ramp of a disintegrating transport plane before wandering mirage-haunted dunes. Supported by contextual environmental melee brawling and a full competitive and co-op multiplayer suite, Drake's Deception earned a 92/100 Metascore and surpassed 6.6 million PS3 sales.
