Supercell (2010)

The Finnish Mobile Titan Behind Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, and Brawl Stars

Finland · 2010 · studio

Founded in 2010 in Helsinki by Ilkka Paananen and five co-founders, Supercell revolutionized the global mobile gaming industry through its radical organizational philosophy of autonomous small teams ('cells'). Producing monumental blockbusters including Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, Hay Day, and Brawl Stars, Supercell generated tens of billions of dollars in lifetime revenue, leading to its historic $8.6 billion acquisition by Tencent in 2016.

The Autonomous 'Cell' Philosophy and Celebrating Failure

CEO Ilkka Paananen structured Supercell so that small teams of 5 to 8 developers operated as independent startups with complete creative autonomy. The studio established a famous corporate ethos of aggressively killing dozens of functional prototypes that failed to demonstrate multi-year retention potential, celebrating each canceled project with champagne to honor lessons learned.

Clash of Clans and the Blueprint of Modern Mobile Gaming

Launched in August 2012, Clash of Clans defined modern asynchronous mobile strategy and clan warfare, generating billions in revenue and topping global app store charts for over a decade. Followed by real-time esports sensation Clash Royale and multiplayer hero shooter Brawl Stars, Supercell established Finland as the world's most profitable mobile development ecosystem.
