StarCraft Proleague Korea (KeSPA)

The Institutionalization of Competitive Gaming

Following the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and South Korea's aggressive broadband roll-out, PC bangs fostered an unprecedented StarCraft: Brood War obsession. Launched by KeSPA in 2003, Proleague united chaebol corporate powerhouses—such as SK Telecom, KT, and Samsung—into formalized rosters with salaries, dedicated coaching staffs, and full-time team training houses.

100,000 Fans at Gwangalli Beach and Legacy

Proleague finals achieved mythical proportions, most famously drawing over 100,000 screaming spectators directly onto the sand of Busan's Gwangalli Beach. Generating national icons like Lim 'BoxeR' Yo-hwan and Lee 'Flash' Young-ho, Proleague created the foundational commercial and infrastructural template for all modern esports.
