Snow Bros. (1990)
Toaplan's Kinetic Single-Screen Arcade Platformer of Chain-Reaction Snowball Physics
Developed by Japanese shoot-'em-up specialist Toaplan and released into arcades in April 1990 (with North American distribution by Romstar), Snow Bros.: Nick & Tom refined the single-screen elimination platformer pioneered by Taito's Bubble Bobble. Packing monsters in snow and kicking giant snowballs across multi-tiered floors, two players chase full-screen bankroll cascades.
From Bullet-Hell Pedigree to Crisp Snowball Chain Reactions
Best known for unforgiving vertical shooters like Truxton and Zero Wing, Toaplan demonstrated remarkable range by applying shooter-grade responsiveness to cute single-screen platforming. Controlling twin snowmen Nick and Tom across 50 Floors to rescue Princesses Puripuri and Puchipuchi from King Scorch, players pelt patrolling goblins and fire-breathing reptiles with crescent snow blasts until they freeze into solid spheres. Kicking a snowball sends it hurtling down ledges and ricocheting off walls—crushing enemies for sushi bonus items and colored potions, riding alongside the rolling ball for temporary invincibility, or showering the arena with 10,000-point banknotes when a single well-aimed kick clears every monster on screen.
Potion Power Curves and Tengen's Celebrated Mega Drive Expansion
Scored with infectious YM3812 earworms by Toaplan composer Osamu Ota, Snow Bros. rewards survival with four stackable potion bottles: Red potions accelerate foot speed, Blue potions thicken snow output to pack foes faster, Yellow potions extend throwing distance across wide gaps, and rare Green potions inflate the snowman into an invincible floating balloon. Lingering too long summons an immortal pumpkin ghost that stalks players around the floor. Beyond solid NES and Game Boy adaptations as Snow Brothers, Tengen's 1993 Japanese Sega Mega Drive conversion became a collector's grail by adding 20 brand-new stages (Floors 51–70) in which the rescued princesses become playable heroes to save a captured Nick and Tom.
