QuakeCon

The Mecca of BYOC LAN Parties and Pure First-Person Shooter Heritage

United States · 1996 · industry

Initiated in 1996 by the IRC Quake community and id Software, QuakeCon is North America's longest-running and largest Bring-Your-Own-Computer (BYOC) LAN festival.

QuakeCon

From an IRC Meetup to North America's Biggest LAN

QuakeCon originated in August 1996 when a group of Quake enthusiasts coordinated via EFnet IRC to meet at a hotel in Garland, Texas, lugging CRT monitors and custom PCs. John Carmack, John Romero, and id Software staffers unexpectedly joined in, establishing a close bond between developers and players that turned QuakeCon into an annual institution.

Technological Masterclasses and Carmack's Keynotes

For nearly two decades, QuakeCon was renowned for John Carmack's legendary unscripted multi-hour keynote speeches detailing 3D rendering breakthroughs, latency reduction, VR hardware, and engine design. It remains a premier tournament battleground for arena FPS legends alongside Bethesda and id game reveals.
