Operation Flashpoint Series
Bohemia Interactive's Uncompromising Military Sim That Gave Birth to ARMA
Developed in 2001 by Czech studio Bohemia Interactive and published by Codemasters, Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis established the modern military simulation (MilSim) genre across 100-square-kilometer islands.
The Chaos of War Across the Malden Archipelago
Rejecting scripted arcade tropes, brothers Marek and Ondřej Španěl modeled an authentic Cold War conflict across 100-square-kilometer islands. Cast as an ordinary infantry recruit, players crawled through fields after suffering limb wounds, navigated by analog compass and star constellations, and commandeered any vehicle—from civilian tractors to T-72 tanks and Hind gunships.
Military Training Contracts and the ARMA Dynasty
The simulation fidelity was so extraordinary that the United States Marine Corps contracted Bohemia to engineer military tactical training simulators (Virtual Battlespace / VBS1). Following an intellectual property split with publisher Codemasters, Bohemia retained their proprietary engine and simulation philosophy, establishing the legendary ARMA dynasty.
