Nodding Heads Games (India's Mythological Indie Triumph)

Hindistan · 2017 · studio

Nodding Heads Games, established in January 2017 in Pune, India by Avichal Singh, Shruti Ghosh, and Ian Maude, is the globally acclaimed independent studio that placed traditional Indian mythology on the international gaming stage. Risking personal insolvency and selling their own apartments after an initial crowdfunding setback, the team authored *Raji: An Ancient Epic* (2020), securing a historic premiere on Nintendo Direct and earning nominations at both The Game Awards and the BAFTA Games Awards.

Founding Sacrifices in Pune

Having spent years in outsourcing assembly pipelines for Western publishers, Avichal Singh and Shruti Ghosh resolved to build a studio honoring indigenous Indian lore. When their 2017 Kickstarter campaign fell short, the founders sold their homes and personal assets to keep the Pune development team salaried, driven by pure conviction.

Pahari Artistry and Raji's Acrobatics

Inspired by the medieval miniature paintings of the Pahari school and the stone-carved courtyards of Rajasthan, *Raji: An Ancient Epic* cast players as an orphaned circus acrobat chosen by Goddess Durga to rescue her brother from demonic hordes. Combining vertical platforming with trident and bow combat, it integrated shadow-puppet cutscenes to narrate Vedic scripture.

Nintendo Direct Showcase and Indian Sovereignty

In August 2020, *Raji* was unveiled as a timed exclusive during a worldwide Nintendo Direct. The game's subsequent nominations at The Game Awards and BAFTA cemented Nodding Heads Games as a trailblazing cultural catalyst for the burgeoning Indian PC and console development community.
