Level-5 (1998)

Transitioning Dragon Quest into Full 3D

After proving its technical mettle on PlayStation 2 with Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy, Square Enix entrusted Level-5 with developing Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (2004). By rendering Akira Toriyama's character designs in expansive, seamless cel-shaded 3D, Level-5 set a visual benchmark for the entire genre.

Handheld Dominance and Studio Ghibli Synthesis

On the Nintendo DS, Level-5 established Professor Layton as an international puzzle phenomenon with over 18 million units sold. Partnering with legendary animation house Studio Ghibli and composer Joe Hisaishi, the studio produced Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, followed by the nationwide media empire of Yo-kai Watch.
