Kick Off 2 (1990)

Dino Dini's Standalone 1990 Amiga and Atari ST Football Masterwork of Aftertouch Skill and Tactical Depth

United Kingdom · 1990 · game

Launched by Anco Software amid Italia '90 World Cup fever in July 1990, Kick Off 2 was Dino Dini and Steve Screech's full-fledged competitive evolution rather than an incremental patch to 1989's Kick Off. Introducing responsive mid-air aftertouch swerve, Player Manager squad cross-compatibility, modular expansion disks, and razor-sharp one-button passing, it still hosts annual Amiga World Championships decades later.

Kick Off 2 (1990)

Aftertouch Ballistics, Player Manager Synergy, and Expansion Disks

Rebuilding his match engine from the ground up for the 1990 season, Dino Dini refined ball elasticity, trapping angles, and one-button shot/pass timing so skilled players could flick chip passes over sliding defenders, execute diving headers, and bend ferocious banana shots around walls using post-kick joystick 'aftertouch' against variable wind and wet, dry, or plastic pitches. Uniquely for 1990, clubs cultivated in Dini's companion management sim Player Manager could be exported directly onto the Kick Off 2 pitch to contest league and European cup fixtures. Anco sustained the platform for years through beloved expansion disks including Giants of Europe, Return to Europe, Winning Tactics, and The Final Whistle, which added offside traps and diving keepers.

The Great Sensible Soccer Rivalry and Living World Cups

Across British, Italian, Greek, and Turkish computer clubs in the early 1990s, Kick Off 2 defined one half of home computing's fiercest ideological divide opposite Sensible Software's Sensible Soccer (1992): where Sensible zoomed the camera out to celebrate sweeping team passing, Kick Off 2 remained an unforgiving virtuoso instrument of close-control dribbling, shoulder charges, and diagonal dead-spot finishing. Remarkably, that competitive flame never died out—organized by the Kick Off Association (KOA) since 2001, veteran masters from across Europe still gather every year with classic competition-pro microswitch joysticks and real Commodore Amiga hardware to contest the official Kick Off 2 World Cup.
