Intelligent Systems (1986)
Inventors of the Tactical RPG, Fire Emblem, and Paper Mario
Founded in 1986 in Kyoto by programmer Toru Narihiro under the mentorship of Gunpei Yokoi and Nintendo, Intelligent Systems invented the modern Tactical RPG genre through Fire Emblem (1990). The close-knit developer is also celebrated for Advance Wars, the imaginative Paper Mario series, and WarioWare, alongside engineering Nintendo's official hardware development kits.
Shouzou Kaga and the Birth of Fire Emblem
Conceived by Shouzou Kaga, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light (1990) for the Famicom merged chessboard turn-based maneuvering with distinct character personalities and unforgiving 'permadeath'. Losing an ally permanently transformed gameplay into a high-stakes emotional drama, establishing the foundational tenets of strategy RPGs.
Advance Wars, Paper Mario, and Development Hardware
Intelligent Systems brought accessible tactical perfection to the West via Advance Wars (2001) on Game Boy Advance and redefined Mario's role-playing adventures with the flat-aesthetic humor of Paper Mario. Behind the scenes, the studio also engineered Nintendo's proprietary in-house hardware emulation systems and development boards across multiple console generations.
