God of War II (2007)

Cory Barlog's Jaw-Dropping PlayStation 2 Swan Song Pitting Kratos Against Zeus and the Sisters of Fate

United States · 2007 · game

God of War II is a 2007 action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2. Directed by former lead animator Cory Barlog with lead programming by Tim Moss, it launched four months after the PlayStation 3's debut yet delivered sixth-generation console hardware's crowning technical spectacle as betrayed war god Kratos defied Olympus itself.

God of War II (2007)

Toppling the Colossus of Rhodes and Defying the Sisters of Fate

Despite internal debate over whether to move God of War II onto the fledgling PlayStation 3, Sony chose to reward its 115-million-strong PlayStation 2 audience—handing the director's chair to lead animator Cory Barlog. Shunned by Olympus while razing Greek cities alongside his Spartan army, newly crowned war god Kratos is tricked into draining his divine power into the Blade of Olympus, battled across an unforgettable thirty-minute opening siege by the animated bronze Colossus of Rhodes, and executed by his own father Zeus. Dragged back from the Underworld by Titan mother Gaia, Kratos flies Pegasus to the Island of Creation—anchored behind four gigantic Steeds of Time—to seize the Loom of Fate and rewrite his murder.

Golden Fleece Parries, Boss Variety, and Seventh-Year PS2 Mastery

Answering the sole criticism of the 2005 original—that it featured only three true boss fights—Barlog packed God of War II with over a dozen mythic showdowns against Theseus, the resurrected Barbarian King, Perseus, Euryale, Kraken, and the three Sisters of Fate, while banishing frustrating spinning-blade climb frustrations. Combat gained razor-sharp defensive counterplay through the Golden Fleece armlet—reflecting Gorgon petrification beams and fireballs back at attackers—alongside Icarus Wings updraft gliding and Amulet of the Fates time-slowing puzzles. Extracting high-resolution textures, sweeping draw distances, and thunderous choral orchestration out of seven-year-old PS2 silicon, its cliffhanger charge up Mount Olympus atop Gaia set the stage for God of War III.
