Frictional Games (2007)

Architects of Defenseless Survival Horror, Amnesia, and Existential Masterpiece SOMA

Sweden · 2007 · studio

Founded in 2007 in Helsingborg by Thomas Grip and Jens Nilsson, Frictional Games redefined horror gaming for the 21st century. By eliminating combat and arming players only with physics-based environmental manipulation and matches in Penumbra and Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010), Frictional catalyzed the streaming era, later exploring artificial consciousness in the existential sci-fi masterpiece SOMA (2015).

Amnesia and the Defenseless Horror Revolution

Powered by their proprietary HPL Engine, Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010) stripped the player of firearms, forcing them to cower in shadows to evade the grotesque Gatherers. Its dynamic Sanity system, haunting acoustic soundscapes, and tactile physics launched a thousand streaming careers, establishing the template for contemporary indie horror.

SOMA: The Existential Submerged Frontier

In 2015, Frictional released SOMA, set within the deep-sea research facility PATHOS-II after Earth's extinction. Exploring philosophical dilemmas surrounding neural scans, digital duplication of the self, and transhuman dread, SOMA was universally hailed as one of the most mature and philosophically profound narratives ever rendered in the medium.
