DreadOut (2014)

Digital Happiness's Indonesian Folklore Survival Horror and Smartphone Apparition Hunting

Indonesia · 2014 · game

Engineered by Bandung-based indie studio Digital Happiness following a successful crowdfunding drive and released in 2014, DreadOut stands as Southeast Asia's breakout international survival horror sensation. Starring high schooler Linda Melinda stranded alongside classmates within an abandoned, cursed ghost town, it heavily channelled the spiritual DNA of Fatal Frame by arming the heroine not with firearms, but with the digital camera and flash of her smartphone to exorcise terrifying regional apparitions like the Pocong and Kuntilanak.

Smartphone Camera Viewfinder Combat

Threats were completely invisible to the naked human eye, requiring players to switch from third-person exploration to a first-person phone viewfinder. Snapping high-precision photographs timed with spectral lunges stunned and dissipated malevolent folklore entities.

Authentic Southeast Asian Mythos and Cinematic Adaptation

Introducing international audiences to terrifying local folklore—shrouded burial corpses (Pocong), child spirits (Tuyul), and scissor-wielding banshees (Kuntilanak)—the game achieved viral streaming fame through creators like PewDiePie, subsequently spawning a live-action theatrical film in 2019.
