XCOM 2 (2016)

Firaxis Games' Guerrilla Resistance Sequel of Procedural Ambush Maps and War of the Chosen Nemeses

United States · 2016 · game

Set twenty years after humanity's canonical surrender to alien occupation, Firaxis Games' February 2016 sequel directed by Jake Solomon inverted XCOM from a planetary defense agency into a mobile guerrilla insurgency aboard the hijacked alien carrier Avenger. Introducing squad concealment ambushes, procedurally stitched maps, urgent turn timers, and deep Steam Workshop modding, it reached its zenith with 2017's War of the Chosen.

Aboard the Avenger: Concealment, Turn Timers, and Procedural Maps

By canonizing failed Ironman campaigns from 2012's Enemy Unknown—declaring Earth capitulated in 2015 to the alien-puppet ADVENT Administration—director Jake Solomon solved the sequel's central pacing flaw: passive Overwatch creeping. Because XCOM now strikes as saboteurs, squads deploy in stealth Concealment to orchestrate devastating opening traps against Viper and Sectoid patrols while eight-to-twelve-turn extraction and hacking timers force bold forward momentum, countered on the strategic map by the ticking Avatar Project doomsday clock. Crucially, launching PC-first let Firaxis build a parcel-based procedural map generator and ship a full Unreal Editor modding SDK that birthed thousands of community creations including Pavonis Interactive's Long War 2.

War of the Chosen and the Peak of Modern Squad Tactics

While the base campaign expanded customization with blade-wielding Rangers, drone-hacking Specialists, and destructible multi-story ADVENT propaganda plazas, August 2017's massive expansion XCOM 2: War of the Chosen transformed the game into an emergent narrative sandbox. Inspired by Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis rivalries, three voiced alien champions—the stealthy Assassin, long-range Hunter, and psionic Warlock—stalk the Commander across regions, learning tactical immunities, kidnapping tired soldiers who have formed XCOM combat bonds, and invading missions mid-firefight alongside zombie swarms known as the Lost and three playable Resistance hero factions: Reapers, Skirmishers, and Templars.
