The Settlers: New Allies (2023)

Ubisoft Düsseldorf's Snowdrop-Engine Reboot Reshaped from Deep Simulation into Streamlined Skirmish RTS

Germany · 2023 · game

Released for Windows in February 2023 and consoles that July by Ubisoft Düsseldorf (formerly Blue Byte), The Settlers: New Allies emerged from five turbulent years of development on Ubisoft's Snowdrop engine. Following original creator Volker Wertich's mid-production departure, the reboot pivoted toward streamlined multi-platform skirmishes among the Elari, Maru, and Jorn, illustrating the modern friction between competitive RTS pacing and classic German economic simulation.

The Settlers: New Allies (2023)

From Volker Wertich's 2018 Vision to the Snowdrop Skirmish Pivot

Unveiled at Gamescom 2018 alongside the thirtieth-anniversary History Collection, the reboot originally boasted franchise founder Volker Wertich at the helm, promising intricate food tiers, roaming town criers, and gladiatorial arena victories powered by Massive Entertainment's Snowdrop engine. After extended silence, creative disagreements prompted Wertich's exit—leading him later to channel his intricate economic philosophy into the independent builder Pioneers of Pagonia—while Ubisoft Düsseldorf redesigned the project for cross-play PC and console controllers. Rebranded The Settlers: New Allies after a divisive 2022 closed beta delay, the finished title centered on direct Engineer border-claiming, tower rushes, and brisk 1v1 to 4v4 battles.

Elari, Maru, and Jorn Factions and Critical Reception

Its thirteen-mission campaign follows the exiled Elari artisans, maritime-minded Maru traders, and hardy northern Jorn clan as they flee cataclysmic homeland upheaval and confront the militaristic Bandit and Fanatic threats across lush volcanic archipelagos. While reviewers commended the gorgeous Snowdrop coastal lighting, cobblestone animations, and approachable gamepad controls on PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch, longtime Aufbauspiel critics lamented the absence of multi-tiered citizen needs, deep agricultural loops, and Victory Point variety. New Allies consequently stands in series historiography as a cautionary case study in streamlining a beloved systemic PC simulation for live-service cross-platform skirmishing.
