Return to Monkey Island (2022)
Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman's Poignant Homecoming Resolving Thirty-One Years of Monkey Island Lore
Developed in secrecy by Ron Gilbert's studio Terrible Toybox with Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games for release on September 19, 2022, Return to Monkey Island reunited co-creators Gilbert and Dave Grossman alongside composers Michael Land, Peter McConnell, and Clint Bajakian. Resolving the 1991 amusement-park cliffhanger while harmonizing later sequels through Rex Crowle's storybook art, it offered a witty, elegiac meditation on aging and nostalgia.
Secret Production, Rex Crowle's Art Direction, and Streamlined Point-and-Click
For decades after leaving LucasArts in 1992, Ron Gilbert vowed never to make another Monkey Island unless he regained creative freedom; following Disney's revival of the Lucasfilm Games label, publisher Devolver Digital discreetly brokered a licensing deal kept secret for two years until April Fools' Day 2022. Built on Gilbert's custom Dinky Engine, the sequel paired Tearaway art director Rex Crowle's angular mid-century picture-book aesthetic with seamless context-sensitive cursor prompts, Casual and Hard puzzle tracks, a diegetic in-game hint book, and Dominic Armato leading returning cast voices alongside original composers Land, McConnell, and Bajakian.
Answering the 1991 Cliffhanger and Reflecting on Growing Older
Rather than erasing post-1991 installments as fans expected, Gilbert and Dave Grossman honored Curse, Escape, and Tales within Guybrush's scrapbook while opening directly inside LeChuck's Revenge's Carnival of the Damned—revealing it as an imaginative game played by Guybrush's young son Boybrush before an older, wistful Guybrush narrates one final race against Captain Madison's millennial Pirate Leaders and LeChuck to unlock the real Secret. Culminating in a quiet, bittersweet theme-park lights-out sequence where Elaine gently encourages her husband toward new horizons, the game won universal acclaim as a mature farewell to golden-age adventure obsession.
