Redneck Rampage (1997)

Xatrix and Interplay's Satirical Moonshine-Fueled Rural Alien-Invasion Comedy

United States · 1997 · game

Developed by Xatrix Entertainment on the Build engine and published in 1997 by Interplay, Redneck Rampage is one of the most eccentric and satirically unconventional first-person shooters of the 1990s. Set in the fictional hamlet of Hickston, Arkansas, it follows brothers Leonard and Bubba fighting off an alien invasion to rescue their prized prizewinning pig Bessie. Replacing medkits with moonshine and pork rinds, it featured gut-meter intoxication meters and a rollicking psychobilly soundtrack featuring Mojo Nixon and The Beat Farmers.

Intoxication and Gut-Meter Resource Management

Healing required consuming illicit moonshine whiskey and pork rinds. However, excessive alcohol induced the 'Gut Meter' status: vision blurred, directional controls swayed erratically, and flatulence alerted nearby alien clones, requiring players to balance nourishment against sobriety.

Rural Weaponry and Psychobilly Soundtrack

Arsenal options ranged from crowbars and hunting shotguns to buzzsaw blade-launchers and dynamite crossbows. Elevated by a licensed CD-audio tracklist of gritty country-rock and cowpunk classics, it earned an enduring cult following among shooter aficionados.
