PUBG: Battlegrounds (2017)

Brendan Greene's Paradigm, Erangel, and the Eruption of the Battle Royale Phenomenon

South Korea · 2017 · game

Debuting on Steam Early Access on March 23, 2017, PUBG: Battlegrounds (PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds) detonated the modern Battle Royale craze. Created by Irish modder Brendan Greene ('PlayerUnknown') and South Korean developer Chang-han Kim at Bluehole (Krafton), the game dropped 100 unarmed players from an airplane onto the militarized island of Erangel to scavenge weaponry and fight to the death within an encroaching blue electrical circle, peaking at an all-time Steam record of 3.25 million concurrent players.

From ARMA Modding to the Concrete of Erangel

Inspired by Kinji Fukasaku's cult film Battle Royale, photographer Brendan Greene crafted mods for ARMA 2 and DayZ. Recognizing the standalone viability of Greene's elimination dynamic, South Korean producer Chang-han Kim installed him as creative director in Seoul. Developing the 8x8 km Soviet-themed proving ground Erangel, the tension of a 100-player parachute insertion followed by weapon scavenging established intense, emergent tactical drama.

The Constricting Blue Zone and Historic Industry Impact

The central mechanical engine was the constricting 'Blue Zone', which forcibly concentrated surviving squads into frantic, unavoidable spatial choke points. The celebratory banner 'Winner Winner Chicken Dinner' conquered global livestreaming on Twitch. Shattering Steam records with over 3.25 million concurrent players and selling 75 million copies, PUBG inspired Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone, reshaping contemporary multiplayer gaming.
