P.T. (2014)

Hideo Kojima and Del Toro's Looping Corridor, Lisa, and the Lost Masterpiece of Horror

Japan · 2014 · game

Shadow-dropped on the PlayStation 4 on August 12, 2014, under the fictional developer banner '7780s Studio', P.T. (Playable Teaser) stands as one of interactive entertainment's greatest horror landmarks. Directed by Hideo Kojima and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro starring Norman Reedus as a prologue for the cancelled Silent Hills, the experience trapped players within a photo-realistic looping domestic corridor rendered in Fox Engine before being infamously expunged from the PlayStation Store by Konami.

The Looping L-Shaped Corridor and Fox Engine Photorealism

Rejecting expansive environments and predictable monster ambushes, Kojima confined player agency to an ordinary suburban L-shaped hallway. Walking through the basement exit door looped players back to the entrance, yet each iteration mutated with escalating psychological dread: a weeping radio broadcasting domestic filicide, a talking fetus in the sink, and the spectral apparition Lisa. Fox Engine's physically based lighting created uncanny, disorienting photorealism.

The Silent Hills Revelation, Cancellation, and Delisted Martyrdom

Solving obscure microphone and spatial audio puzzles revealed the cinematic trailer for Silent Hills. However, corporate acrimony between Kojima and Konami led to the project's cancellation in 2015. Konami scrubbed P.T. from digital servers, rendering PS4 consoles with the teaser installed lucrative collector items selling for thousands on secondary markets. Inspiring Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Allison Road, P.T. remains interactive art's most celebrated vanished masterpiece.
