Kenya · 2015 · game

Nairobi X, released on June 16, 2015, by Kenyan solo 3D animator and coder Andrew Kaggia under BlackTower Studios, is East Africa's landmark 3D science-fiction first-person shooter. Setting an extraterrestrial invasion in the year 2030 across the iconic cityscape of Nairobi—featuring detailed digital recreations of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) and Uhuru Highway—Nairobi X shattered Eurocentric sci-fi tropes and ignited the modern Kenyan digital gaming movement.

An Alien Invasion on African Soil

Rejecting Hollywood conventions where alien invasions exclusively assault Manhattan or Tokyo, Andrew Kaggia relocated the apocalyptic battleground to Nairobi. Players step into the combat boots of Officer Oti, an elite operative of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), defending landmark Nairobi skyscrapers and traffic circles against swarms of extraterrestrial invaders.

Solo Engineering and Swahili Voice Acting

A self-taught computer animator, Kaggia authored the architectural modeling, texture mapping, and physics systems single-handedly using Unity 3D. The game distinguished itself with authentic military radio chatter in Sheng (Kenyan urban slang) and Swahili, delivering unprecedented cultural resonance for African youth.

Global Media Phenomenon and Legacy

Nairobi X sparked widespread international acclaim, profiled extensively on CNN, the BBC, and Agence France-Presse. Accumulating hundreds of thousands of downloads, it proved to international observers that high-fidelity 3D action games could emerge directly from Sub-Saharan Africa.
