Kuluya Games (Lagos & Africa's First Mobile Game Factory)

Nijerya · 2012 · studio

Kuluya Games, launched in 2012 in Lagos, Nigeria by Kunle Kabiru and backed by Jason Njoku's technology incubator Spark, was Sub-Saharan Africa's premier high-volume mobile and web game studio. Channeling the vibrant humor of Nollywood cinema and Lagos street life, Kuluya engineered an unprecedented portfolio of over 60 localized games—including viral phenomenon *Oga at the Top*, *Okada Ride*, and *Ma Baby*—demonstrating the explosive potential of domestic African smartphone gaming.

Kuluya Games (Lagos & Africa's First Mobile Game Factory)

Capturing the Kinetic Humor of Lagos

Kuluya recognized that African smartphone owners were inundated with Western clones that completely ignored local cultural touchstones. Operating from Lagos, Kuluya crafted lightweight, accessible HTML5 and Android games that satirized everyday realities: navigating chaotic motorcycle taxi (Okada) gridlocks, traditional village wrestling, and Nollywood dramatic tropes.

The Viral Sensation of Oga at the Top

In 2013, an embarrassing viral television gaffe by a government commandant repeating 'My Oga at the top knows' gripped Nigerian pop culture. Within 48 hours, Kuluya developed and launched *Oga at the Top*, a satirical tap game that swept the nation, capturing the top slot on regional download charts and validating Kuluya's rapid-prototyping model.

Pioneering Low-Bandwidth Architecture

Designing specifically for low-end devices and expensive cellular data caps, Kuluya pioneered micro-installation packages under 5 MB. Alongside Maliyo Games, Kuluya demonstrated that indigenous African game development was commercially viable, charting the course for the contemporary Nigerian tech ecosystem.
