Dino Crisis (1999)
Shinji Mikami's Real-Time 3D 'Panic Horror' Thriller Pitting Agent Regina Against Velociraptors
Dino Crisis is a 1999 survival horror game developed and published by Capcom for the PlayStation. Directed and produced by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami with planning by Shu Takumi and music by Makoto Tomozawa, it traded lumbering zombies and static pre-rendered backdrops for a real-time 3D research complex stalked by relentless prehistoric predators.
From Mansion Dread to Real-Time 3D 'Panic Horror'
Seeking to push beyond Resident Evil's slow-moving undead and fixed photographic backgrounds, Shinji Mikami drew inspiration from The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Aliens to coin 'panic horror.' Deployed by parachute onto remote Ibis Island to extract rogue physicist Dr. Edward Kirk, Secret Operation Raid Team specialist Regina discovers that Kirk's Third Energy reactor tore open space-time, swapping surrounding jungle and laboratories with Cretaceous predators. Powered by a custom real-time polygonal environment engine, the camera pans, tilts, and tracks Regina down claustrophobic steel corridors as Velociraptors smash through skylights, leap across railings, knock firearms out of her hands, and pursue her through ventilation shafts.
Hemorrhage Survival, Tranquilizer Mixing, and Branching Tactics
Because a single raptor's jaws absorb far more gunfire than a zombie, Dino Crisis shifted survival resource management toward evasion, laser security shutters, and chemical crafting: players mix Resuscitation and Anesthetic compounds to brew potent tranquilizer darts alongside hemostats needed to staunch active bleeding wounds whose blood trails lure nearby carnivores. Across the facility's DDK cipher locks and pipe-routing puzzles, Regina repeatedly chooses between stoic commander Gail's lethal assault plans and hacker Rick's cautious technical bypasses, steering the squad toward three distinct endings. Selling 2.4 million copies on PlayStation, Dino Crisis established Regina as one of late-1990s survival horror's iconic heroines.
