Dean Hall (1981)
Creator of DayZ, Pioneer of Open-World Survival and Early Access
Dean 'Rocket' Hall is a New Zealand game designer and former Royal New Zealand Air Force officer. Drawing from grueling survival training exercises in Brunei, Hall created the DayZ modification for ARMA 2 in 2012. DayZ pitted players against hypothermia, sepsis, zombies, and the volatile cruelty of fellow survivors, inventing the modern multiplayer open-world survival genre and accelerating the commercial ascent of Steam Early Access.
Brunei Wilderness to the Wastes of Chernarus
Surviving severe starvation during jungle survival school, Hall sought an uncompromising simulation of human vulnerability. Repurposing Bohemia Interactive's ARMA 2 engine across 225 km² of post-Soviet Chernarus, DayZ offered no tutorials, mini-maps, or save states. Players negotiated broken legs, contaminated blood bags, and treacherous player-versus-player standoffs, delivering unprecedented emergent tension.
Catalyzing the Streaming and Survival Boom
DayZ became a sensation on Twitch and YouTube, demonstrating that unscripted player interactions could drive massive viral entertainment. Igniting an industry-wide survival gold rush—directly preceding Rust, Ark: Survival Evolved, and PUBG—Hall later founded RocketWerkz in Auckland, developing systemic simulations like Stationeers and Icarus.
