David Perry
Founder of Shiny Entertainment: Earthworm Jim, MDK, and Cloud Gaming Architect at Gaikai
Born in Northern Ireland in 1967, British-American video game programmer, director, and serial tech entrepreneur David Perry was one of the defining kinetic talents of the 1990s. Engineering fluid animation pipelines on Virgin’s Disney's Aladdin, Perry established Shiny Entertainment in Laguna Beach in 1993. Partnering with artist Doug TenNapel, he created the irreverent platforming icon Earthworm Jim, followed by the groundbreaking 3D sniper action spectacle MDK (1997). In 2008, Perry co-founded Gaikai, pioneering cloud streaming technology acquired by Sony for $380 million to establish PlayStation's cloud gaming backbone.
Traditional Animation Meets Genesis Hardware
On Sega Genesis, Perry engineered the 'Digicel' compression process, streaming hand-drawn cel animations directly to cartridge ROM on Disney's Aladdin and Earthworm Jim, setting an unprecedented graphical benchmark for 16-bit action. Their philosophy of mechanical precision and holistic authorial oversight (Born: October 28, 1967, Birthplace: Lisburn, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, Role: Lead Programmer, Studio Founder, Cloud Tech Pioneer, Key Ventures: Virgin Games, Shiny Entertainment, Gaikai, Sony) transformed rigid code into dynamic emotional encounters. This trailblazing legacy redefined interactive authorship across the global gaming community.
MDK and the Gaikai Cloud Revolution
Perry directed MDK, pioneering the 100x sniper scope zoom in third-person shooting. Transitioning to infrastructure, his streaming startup Gaikai proved low-latency cloud gaming was viable, culminating in PlayStation Now.
