Celestial Games (1994)

The Historic South African Studio Behind Toxic Bunny that Launched the Nation's Games Industry

South Africa · 1994 · studio

Founded in 1994 in Johannesburg by Travis Bulford, Celestial Games made history by creating South Africa's first internationally distributed commercial PC video game. Debuting in 1996 with Toxic Bunny, a side-scrolling platformer for MS-DOS, Celestial proved that high-quality commercial software could emerge from post-Apartheid South Africa.

Coding in the Shadow of Apartheid's End

Following years of international trade embargoes, South Africa lacked publisher networks or specialized software infrastructure. Working out of a makeshift home studio, Travis Bulford programmed an engine supporting parallax scrolling in pure assembly and C. Featuring a heavily armed, coffee-addicted mutant rabbit, Toxic Bunny became an instant national sensation.

International Retail Success and African Legacy

Securing distribution through Vision Software in the United Kingdom and Europe, Toxic Bunny surpassed 150,000 retail copies, demonstrating commercial viability. Celestial Games served as the foundational inspiration for an entire generation of African software developers, directly paving the way for South Africa's modern indie scene.
