CD-Action Magazine (1996)
Wrocław-Based Polish Gaming Periodical Known for Cover-Mounted Licensed Full Games
Launched in Wrocław in April 1996 by publishing house Silver Shark and operated for nearly two decades under Bauer Media Group, CD-Action is Poland's longest-running print computer and video game magazine. By bundling officially licensed full commercial PC games on cover-mounted CD-ROMs and DVDs, the publication undercut informal street piracy across Poland.
Wrocław Launch, Optical Media Positioning, and Editorial Community
In the mid-1990s, Poland's video game press was concentrated in Warsaw around established monthlies such as Top Secret, Secret Service, Gambler, and Reset, most of which sold print-only issues because household CD-ROM drives were only beginning to enter the domestic PC market. In April 1996, Wrocław publishing firm Silver Shark, founded by Zbigniew Bański, introduced CD-Action as a glossy, high-page-count monthly packaged with a cover-mounted compact disc containing playable demos, patches, hardware drivers, and shareware utilities in every issue. Under long-serving editor-in-chief Jerzy Poprawa and senior editors including Maciej Kuc, the editorial staff combined multi-page game criticism with consumer PC hardware benchmarking and technology essays. A defining element of the magazine's readership culture was Action Redakcja, an extensive reader correspondence and satire section curated by the pseudonymous editor Smuggler, whose undisclosed real-world identity became an enduring motif in Polish gaming culture and fostered a nationwide community exchange prior to widespread household internet access.
Licensed Full-Game Cover Discs, Anti-Piracy Economics, and Corporate Evolution
The commercial turning point that separated CD-Action from rival 1990s Polish periodicals was its systematic acquisition of global licensing rights to bundle complete commercial PC games directly on its cover discs. Priced at newsstands at roughly the same cost charged by informal bazaar vendors for a single unauthorized CD-R copy, an issue of CD-Action provided a thick print magazine alongside multiple pressed CD-ROMs—and later dual-layer DVDs—containing legal full releases of titles such as Unreal, Fallout, Total Annihilation, Gothic, and Polish productions like Teenagent. Monthly circulation rose well above one hundred thousand copies at its commercial peak, attracting acquisition briefly by Future Network in 2000 and then by German publishing conglomerate Bauer Media Group (Wydawnictwo Bauer) in 2001. While earlier competitors ceased publication during the early 2000s, CD-Action broadened its scope from PC-exclusive coverage to multi-platform console journalism. Following a 2020 buyout by Polish gaming agency Fantasyexpo, the title transitioned in 2022 to a quarterly print collector format paired with a daily online editorial portal and retrospective special editions documenting Central European computing history.
