The Wizardry Epoch and Systemic Role-Playing
Joining Sir-Tech in 1981, Romero advanced from playtesting to lead design and writing on Wizardry VI: Cosmic Forge, Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant, and Wizardry 8. Her intricate character creation mathematics and tactical interplay helped establish PC role-playing systems, subsequently influencing turn-based combat dynamics in Jagged Alliance.
The Mechanic is the Message and Academic Acclaim
In 2009, Romero debuted 'The Mechanic is the Message', a series of non-digital games illustrating human tragedy through pure rule systems. In Train, players optimize logistical railway networks only to discover the destination is a Nazi concentration camp. Her boundary-pushing ludological scholarship earned international acclaim and the 2017 BAFTA Special Award.
