Anino Games (2001)

The Historic Pioneer of Philippine Game Development and Creator of Anito

Philippines · 2001 · studio

Established in November 2001 in Manila by Niel Dagondon, Anino Games (originally Anino Entertainment) was the historic first commercial video game development studio founded in the Philippines. In 2003, Anino published Anito: Defend a Land Enraged, an isometric action-RPG rooted in pre-colonial Philippine folklore, earning the first international IGF accolades for Southeast Asia.

Anito and Pre-Colonial Southeast Asian Mysticism

Lacking local game engines or specialized middleware in 2001, Dagondon and his collegiate team engineered their own proprietary 3D engine named 'Anito'. Set in the 16th century on the island of Maroka, Anito tasked players with investigating the disappearance of an indigenous chieftain amidst colonial tensions and animist spirit gods, featuring traditional kulintang brass gong instrumentation.

Catalyzing the Philippine Video Game Industry

Recognized at the 2004 Independent Games Festival in San Jose, Anino demonstrated the creative potential of Filipino programmers. Dagondon subsequently co-founded the Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDAP), establishing national academic degree programs in game engineering and transforming Manila into a premier regional game production hub.
