Conscience in Gaming: This War of Mine and the Societal Survival of Frostpunk

Poland · 2010 · studio

Founded in 2010 in Warsaw by former Metropolis Software developers, 11 bit studios is a globally respected pioneer of ethically profound gaming. Transforming survival games into examinations of human empathy under extreme pressure, they created This War of Mine (2014)—the first video game officially added to a national school curriculum—and the bleak society-survival epic Frostpunk (2018).

This War of Mine and Civilian Reality in Conflict

Inspired by the Siege of Sarajevo, This War of Mine (2014) inverted military tropes by placing players in charge of trapped, starving civilians enduring snipers, freezing winters, and moral starvation. Its unflinching depiction of suffering earned global critical praise and made history when the Polish Ministry of Education designated it an official supplementary reading text for high schools.

Frostpunk: Inventing the Society Survival Genre

In 2018, 11 bit studios created Frostpunk, challenging players to govern humanity's final Victorian settlement around a colossal heat generator in -120°C permafrost. By forcing players to sign grim laws on child labor, amputations, and authoritarian religious doctrines, Frostpunk elevated city-builders into psychological stress-tests, a legacy deepened with Frostpunk 2 (2024).
